Industry Adoption of Solar Electricity

WASHINGTON — As financial markets deteriorated in October 2008, Solar Electric Power
Association Executive Director Julia Hamm challenged the solar and
utility industries to deploy solar power on a massive scale despite new
economic barriers. She issued the challenge in a speech at Solar Power
International, the nation’s largest solar conference and trade show.
Today, the Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA) issued a report
demonstrating that the industry has responded even amidst a tough
economic climate.

SEPA’s “2008
Top Ten Utility Solar Integration Rankings” report identifies the
utilities in the U.S. that have the most significant amounts of solar
electricity integrated into their portfolio, and records the increased
collaboration of the U.S. electric utility and solar energy industries.
The report demonstrates that the utility segment is making a major
investment to increase the amount of solar energy in power portfolios,
with many utilities doubling the amount of solar power in their
portfolio in just one year. The overall installed solar capacity of the
top ten ranked utilities rose from 711 megawatts to 882 megawatts,
reflecting 25 percent growth. Ninety-two utilities participated in this
year’s survey, an increase of more than 80 percent over last year,
showing that the utility industry’s interest in solar power is stronger
than ever.

A proposal now being considered by the U.S. Senate would impose new liability standards and regulations on debtors attorneys in bankruptcy cases. If these standards become law, they could impact many debtors bankruptcy attorneys, along with attorneys who work for programs funded by Legal Services Corp. or other legal aid programs, and attorneys who provide pro bono bankruptcy representation. On Feb. 1, Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) introduced bankruptcy reform legislation, S. 256, that would increase the liability and administrative burdens of bankruptcy attorneys under the Bankruptcy Code. The new measure, which is similar to legislation that was approved by the House of Representatives last year, H.R. 975/S. 1920, would require debtors attorneys to: (1) certify the accuracy of the debtors bankruptcy schedules, under penalty of court sanctions; (2) certify the debtors ability to make payments under a reaffirmation agreement; and (3) identify, advertise and conduct themselves as debt relief agencies subject to a host of new regulations.

However, in many cases risk managers do not take the appropriate steps to secure and protect the evidence that is available at the accident scene. Consequently, this accident-related evidence, which constitutes the only proof as to how the accident actually occurred, is often lost, thereby preventing its use in case exposure evaluation, negotiation settlement or litigation. As a result, risk managers must implement measures to ensure that a rapid, competent on-site accident investigation is conducted that secures the site and preserves important physical evidence. An accident can be defined as an unexpected or undesirable event that occurs at a specific point in time. These article give the impression that concrete is, or can be, made waterproof or watertight with the addition of an admixture. These terms are considered in Concrete Society Technical Report 18 (second edition) A guide to the selection of admixtures for concrete and CIRIA reports 139 and 140 Water-resisting basements. Both documents indicate that concrete cannot be waterproof or watertight in the true meaning of the words since this implies impervious or absolute prevention of penetration by water in liquid and or gaseous form. The correct term that should be used is water-resisting, describing the ability to resist water. This depends on the concrete quality and the effect of any integral admixture. The main function of water-resisting admixtures is to reduce surface absorption and/or passage of water through the hardened concrete. Other benefits such as improved durability may also result from their addition. It is worth noting that BS 8007: 1987 Design of concrete structures for retaining aqueous liquids only requires a certain concrete grade, with limitations on cement content and water/cement ratio to give the necessary water-resisting performance. Water-resisting admixtures are not required. The weak points in any water-retaining or resisting concrete structure are seldom the concrete itself, but cracking and performance of construction and movement joints. These can be controlled with careful design and construction, thereby limiting and subsequent ingress or loss of water.

PHOENIX — Cosmetic surgeons are experiencing a major atrophy in business because of the national economic downturn. Both gross billings and patient volumes for cosmetic surgery were down by one-third in the past year, according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgerys 2008 Economic Impact Survey, released here during the groups annual meeting. “Times are tough, theres no doubt about that. Overall there has been a decline in most cosmetic practices, but I think some have been more affected than others. Practices that are more dermatologic-cosmetic and less invasive have seen much less if any decline. Some of the less invasive procedures have even seen an increase in some practices as patients who are trying to watch their dollars try to figure out what they can still do to enhance and improve their looks,” said Dr. Glaser, who is professor and vice chairman of dermatology at St. Louis University. In addition, many cosmetically-oriented dermatologists have been able to maintain a strong bottom line in the current economic climate by doing more noncosmetic procedures, she added in an interview.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the integrated nutrition education program developed at the University of Arizona (UA) College of Medicine (COM). The nutrition curriculum was initiated in 1993 and fully implemented in 1997. Less than 100 students were enrolled in each graduating class. Enrollment was on average 51% men, 67% white, and the mean age of the students was 24 yr. The curriculum did not comprise a single nutrition course but rather integrated nutrition content into required courses throughout the 4 yr of the undergraduate medical studies. To determine changes in total hours of nutrition content, the researchers performed an analysis in each course to identify the nutrition content before and after the development and implementation of the nutrition curriculum. Evaluation of the nutrition curriculum project entailed three primary outcomes. The first evaluation included an inventory of the nutrition topics included throughout the medical training before and after development of the integrated nutrition curriculum. The second evaluation technique measured applied skills in the area of nutrition with use of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). The third evaluation method used the postgraduation questionnaire for student evaluation of the curriculum nutrition content. The graduating classes of 1994 and 1995 were exposed to a minimal amount of the integrated nutrition curriculum, primarily during their clinical practice education. These graduating students were compared with the classes of 1997 and 1998 graduates, who received the nutrition curriculum as an integrated component of both their basic science training and their clinical practice training. At the start of the integrated nutrition curriculum, there were 35 hr of required nutrition instruction during the 4 yr of medical education. From 1993 to 1997, 75 hr of required nutrition instruction existed. By 1996, 37 of the essential 40 nutrition topics recommended as essential, and 20 additional topics were included in medical student instruction. Courses with the most significant increases in nutrition content included social and behavioral sciences, biochemistry, and preparation for clinical medicine.

Abstract Methods: Breast reduction scars (N = 10 scars) and abdominoplasty scars (N = 5 scars) were treated using both LPDL and IPL. For breast reduction scars, one side was treated with each technique. For abdominoplasty scars, one half of the scar was treated with each device. Two treatments were performed 2 months apart. Physician global assessment scores of improvement were determined by side-by-side comparison of preoperative and randomly presented postoperative photographs. Patient pain scores during treatment were also obtained and the presence of post-treatment purpura was assessed. Results: Mean improvement on a 0 to 3 point scale was 2.2 (55%) after the first LPDL treatment and 3.2 (80%) after the second. Mean improvement was 1.8 (45%) after the first IPL treatment and 2.6 (65%) after the second. Differences in improvement between the LPDL and IPL sides were not statistically significant. Patients rated IPL as more painful than LPDL. The incidence of post-treatment purpura was lower with IPL. Conclusions: This pilot study suggests that LPDL and IPL are equally effective in improving the appearance of hypertrophic surgical scars. IPL offers a novel method of treating scars that minimizes the risk of purpura.

For those unfamiliar with the insurance industry, reinsurance companies provide insurance to “primary” insurers, the insurance companies that provide individuals with auto, home, and life insurance and businesses with commercial insurance. The primary insurance company transfers risk to reinsurers in exchange for the premiums associated with the risk. The transfer facilitates three things. First, it allows the primary insurers to accept more business from their clients. Second, it distributes and diversifies risks within the global insurance industry. Finally, it allows the primary insurer to accept a larger amount of risk, while retaining less risk on its balance sheet and reducing the chances of insolvency from any one major client or catastrophe. Reinsurers are considered the experts on risk assessment in the industry–we must be to assume risk from other risk management companies. In fact, reinsurers generally supply underwriting and actuarial support to their clients, providing guidance on best practices. Though the public views insurance companies as deriving their revenue from premiums, they can be viewed as investment funds with contingent liabilities (contingent upon an insured loss event–a fire, earthquake, car accident, etc.). Asset management and asset/liability management are core competencies of all large (re)insurers, since they manage huge asset portfolios derived from the premiums that reside with the insurer until the claims are made. The Swiss Reinsurance Company was founded in 1863 after the need for a Swiss reinsurer was made apparent by a catastrophic fire in the town of Glarus. In 2002, Swiss Re earned approximately $20 billion in premiums, and assets were over $100 billion. It is the largest reinsurer of life insurance and the second largest reinsurer of property/casualty (P C) risk worldwide. Swiss Re is a company that prides itself on its strength of risk management knowledge–our mission is “To be the authority on managing capital and risk.” As head of Swiss Res Economic Research and Consulting (ER C), North America, I have responsibility for the North American part of Swiss Res “sigma” insurance research program. In addition, I manage Swiss Res North American strategic planning for the Life and Property Casualty business groups and global strategic planning for our Financial Services business group. Also, I supervise the internal consulting ER C does for the local business groups. Finally, I act as the chief economist for Conning Asset Management, a wholly owned subsidiary that manages assets of medium-sized insurance companies. Given my background at WEFA, Inc. (now Global Insight), one of my mandates as head of the NY branch of ER C is to strengthen ER Cs ties to our proprietary asset managers and to provide guidance on macroeconomic forecasting and the analysis of sovereign risk. I am supported in this work by an excellent staff of five–four of whom have Ph.D.s and the fifth a masters degree, all in economics. One is an expert in P C insurance, a second specializes in life insurance. The three others are experts in financial markets, but also provide support to our life and P C business groups.

Engineering design is the process of transforming customers wants into design solutions. Conceiving, evaluating and selecting good design solutions are difficult tasks with enormous consequences. Fundamental conceptual weakness that occur due to the selection of a poor design solution may never be fully recovered by any subsequent design improvement. Many attempts have been made to establish good evaluation criteria for design solutions. A recent trend in engineering design research is the enhancement of the design process to create better design solutions. A huge body of research in engineering design has been published in German on design practice. Most of these efforts are listed in the German Guidelines VDI (Varian Destscher Ingenieure)–2221, [1], and in Hubka [2] and also Phal and Beitz [3]. The latest contribution in this stream is the axiomatic design as proposed by Suh [4–6] and Suh and Rinderle [7]. In this approach, two fundamental design principles, the Independence Axiom and the Information Axi om were proposed and such that any violation of these axioms in a design causes fundamental conceptual weakness in the design solution. For example, when the Independence Axiom can not be satisfied in a design functional coupling can weaken the design controllability. On the other hand, a design solution may suffer from complexity when the Information Axiom is not followed. Excessive complexity is a major contributor to any fundamental conceptual weakness in a design solution. The objective of this paper is to explore components of complexity in engineering design and to derive the mathematical relationships to quantify them. Section 2 discusses the necessary background in axiomatic design. Section 3 discusses general aspects of complexity. In Section 4, we identify and derive the mathematical relationships that quantify variability and vulnerability components of complexity in engineering design. Section 5 identifies correlation as another component of complexity under the assumption of a normal distribution. Section 6 is the conclusion section.

  I was on an assignment at Domra Kanda, an asylum for the mentally ill in Kishoreganj, Bangladesh, where the only medications provided are these medallions filled with spiritual spells and blessed water from traditional spiritual healers. Illiteracy about medical treatments–particularly those related to mental health issues–misconceptions and limited health facilities mean that many parents resort to their faith in such medallions and other blessings from spiritual healers. The clinics which provide such traditional solutions do not offer scientific medications of any type and neither are they approved by any health authority. But for many Bangladeshis, faith in traditional healers and their treatments is more powerful, effective and easily available than scientific medication. The parents strongly believe that it is their faith in such spirituality that will cure their child and bring back the long lost peace and happiness to their family.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The amount of water on planet Earth has not changed in the last two billion years - but in the last century, water use increased at twice the rate of the world population. The United States flushes 6.8 billion gallons of water down the toilet every day, while more than half of our states anticipate freshwater shortages in the next 10 years. These are just a few of the facts plumbers learned when they attended one of the workshops held in California this fall to introduce the new GreenPlumbers[R] program. The program, which originated in Australia in 2001, is giving plumbers a new image - and a new mission. “Plumbers have long held their mission to be protecting the health of the country,” said Stephen Lehtonen, spokesperson for GreenPlumbersUSA. “Because of climate change and global warming, our new mission is to protect the resources of the planet by training plumbers to be advocates and educators in environmental protection and conservation.” Lehtonen facilitated a 15-year agreement that allows the enormously successful and effective GreenPlumbers[R] training program of Australia to be implemented in the United States. “GreenPlumbers[R] is an accreditation program that trains plumbers in water conservation and climate care issues,” Lehtonen said. “The program is designed to help save water and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” Intended as a comprehensive industry response to climate and water care issues, the program is open to all plumbers, regardless of affiliation or association membership. GreenPlumbers[R] has developed a five-course accreditation that totals 32 hours of training. The courses are Climate Care, Caring For Our Water, Solar Hot Water, Water-Efficient Technology, and Inspection Report Service. Training workshops debuted in California this fall. The response from attending plumbers and contractors has been very positive. After being trained in Caring for Our Water and Climate Care classes, attendees commented: “Very overdue education. Thank God its here now,” and, “Conserving water and utilizing the new technology will help save my clients money and build my companys reputation.” The response from government agencies and conservation groups has also been enthusiastic. “This is a great idea,” said Karen Morvay, water conservation specialist at the Santa Clara Valley Water District. “With the direct contact plumbers make each day with residents, I cant imagine a better spokesperson for energy and water use efficiency.”

EVERYONE ON THE CREW pulls together when they row. Its much the same for the engineers who design the boats. As a manufacturer of racing-standard rowing boats, Filippi Boats of Donoratico, Italy, is using computational fluid dynamics to design what engineers hope will be winning boats next month at the Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Using CFD to simulate a rowing boat is more complex than using the application to optimize a boats hull design, which is a common use for the technology, according to Filippi Lido, who owns Filippi Boats. While most boats are propelled through the water at a constant rate, a rowing boat moves forward with the crews rhythmic rowing action. As the boat accelerates and decelerates through each stroke, both the position of the boat and its attitude in the water are dynamically modified, which makes for a complex problem with multiple degrees of freedom. For the past year, engineers at Filippi Boats have been using Comet CFD software from CD adapco of New York. The boatmaker is also working with engineers at the Universita Politecnico di Milano to design the boats. The engineers simulate the periodicaccelerations caused by each stroke of the oars. The accelerations cause time-dependent changes of resistance and propulsion.
